Computers, Laptops and Wireless

Office of Technology Services (OTS) computers are available for use in both the Mortensen and Allen libraries. In Mortensen Library, all are Windows desktops with a variety of applications installed. In Allen Library, the desktop computers are iMacs. Mortensen Library also has Windows laptops and a few Mac laptops; Allen has both Windows and Mac laptops for loan (see below). The University’s OTS department operates a Users Branch on the main level of the Harrison Libraries for computer/laptop help, connectivity issues, scanning and printing assistance, or dial 860.768.4357 for 24-hour Technology Services help.

  • Desktop Computers (located on all three floors of Harrison Libraries) are intended primarily for research purposes, with links to the Internet for access to the wide variety of Top Tools provided by the Libraries. All computers on the lower level are in the Allen Library and are all Macs.  All computers on the main and upper levels are PC computers.

  • Collaboration Units, located on the main level near the Reference/ITS desk, there are two types of tables. Type 1 has a large monitor with a computer on a large table which seats five and includes a wireless mouse and keyboard. Type 2 has a curved monitor with a computer and accommodates up to three users. The units are available on a first-come first-served basis. However, the Harrison Libraries staff will regulate use by time or purpose at its discretion during busy times.

  • Collaboration Rooms - L310 has a three-keyboard computer with chairs for eight collaborators. L-305 and L-309 are presentation rooms. A key must be signed out for L306, L309, L310. L-311–314. They all have two-keyboard computers with a large screen adjustable mount monitor. The rooms are currently first-come first-served.

  • Laptop Computers and iPads may be checked out at the Circulation Desk of either library by current University students, faculty, or staff. A University ID is required. Laptops have a wide variety of software installed. They also have connections to the secure wireless network. See Mortensen and Allen Library laptop policies for further information.   • Microform Reader is located on the lower level. For assistance, please consult staff at Circulation desk.

  • Networked Printers are available on all three levels including the Allen Library. Printouts are $0.05 per page. Cash is not accepted. University IDs with HawkCASH may be used to pay for printouts or copies. Funds may be added to a HawkCash account at the vending machine on the main level of Mortensen or in the Konover Center. The minimum which can be added is $1. The vending machine does not accept coins. Those who do not have a University ID card may purchase a copier card from the Mortensen Circulation Desk. The card costs $1. An additional $1 minimum is required for purchasing printouts or copies. A Color Printer is located on the main level. Printouts are $0.50 per page. 

  • Networked Scanners that print, email and save images are available on each level.

Computer Assistance

  • Search a library source (i.e., a database or the catalog) – call the Mortensen Reference department (860.768.4142) or Allen Library (860.768.4491).

  • Connect to a library source, general computer problems or email questions – call the University’s ITS Support line (860.768.5999).

  • Access electronic resources from off campus – you need a University email account. See Off Campus Access for information.
