Grants, Proposals and Parents

The Libraries had a banner year with outside funding support. The J. Walton Bissell Foundation supported the proposal for acquisitions in the area of dance and theatre. The Foundation has been a supporter of both education and the University of Hartford for many years. In the summer of 2004, The University Libraries received the collection from Dance Connecticut. However, to adequately support the growing specialty of Bachelor in Fine Arts with a major in Dance, more resources were required. The Foundation’s support allowed us to purchase additional dance and theatre materials in the forms of books and media.
spacerThe William and Alice Mortensen Foundation funded the Libraries in the area of dance and physical therapy. As do all students, Dance majors need library materials in the form of books and media. The Physical Therapy students also need like materials. This proposal was a perfect match. Physical Therapy majors need to know how to treat injured dancers, and dancers need to know how to respect their bodies.

spacerWhen I think about my parents I am amazed at the amount of support and encouragement I was given over the years. The Parents Association at the University is just like my folks; always eager to read the Library proposals, always willing to support the Libraries, and always willing to entertain the crazy and interesting ideas that the Libraries come up with.
spacerThis year the Parents Association funded new computers for the Woods Family Classroom in Mortensen Library. The computers in the classroom were purchased when the classroom was built – 3 years ago. Last year alone, over 6112 individuals were in that room either for library bibliographic instruction, faculty training, or specially arranged sessions. The need for library instruction is growing in demand and, because of the wear and tear on the computers, this was the year for replacement. New computers have been purchased and we are waiting for the shipment to arrive.
spacerWe cannot thank the foundations and the Parents Association enough for their support. ■
