Part 4: Finding Periodical Articles Using a General Database
Articles will be major sources for your research. Use articles to find specific, detailed, current information.
Since articles are more detailed and specific than books, you will need to focus your search more narrowly than you did for books. Use the information you found earlier to help modify your search.
There is a large and growing collection of electronic tools for finding periodical articles. These tools are called Databases. Almost all of the Libraries' Databases are subscriptions, available via the Internet to current University of Hartford students, faculty and staff. If you are working in the Libraries or using a computer directly connected to the University's network (in a dorm room, for example), you can access them easily. If you want to use them from off campus or using a modem on campus, please consult the Off Campus Access page for information. You must have a University email account to use the Databases from off campus.
The Libraries' subscription databases are accessible using the Web. Do not, however, confuse the information available with what you find on the "open Web" (which will be discussed in Part 7).
Web search engines (Google, Yahoo, etc.) will not find the scholarly journal articles and other resources included in the Databases.
