Abstract - Short summary of the content of a book or journal article. Commonly found in databases, some periodicals indexes.
Acquisitions - Office responsible for the ordering and receipt of library materials other than serials and standing orders. Part of Technical Services.
Allen Library - Part of University Libraries serving the Hartt School. Located in the East Wing of the Gray Center.
Annotation - See Abstract.
Annual - A publication released on a regular, once a year schedule.
Archives - Collection of manuscripts and other materials pertaining to the history of the University. Also stores one copy of each thesis or dissertation done at the University. Ask for information in the Periodicals department, lower level of Mortensen.
Ask a Librarian - Email reference service providing quick information and assistance in conducting research. Response is generally within 24 hours.
Barcode - Computer readable code, inserted in all library books and found on some borrowers' cards, used to speed circulation.
Bibliography - List of research sources used in composing a document. Also, a collection (usually annotated) of sources related to a topic. Do not confuse with biography.
Bindery - Commercial (off campus) site which turns loose issues of periodicals into bound volumes and repairs books. Materials at the bindery are not available for approximately one month.
Biography - Book or article about the life of a person. Do not confuse with bibliography.
Bound Periodicals - Back issues of periodicals which have been sent to the bindery. In Mortensen, shelved on the lower level in call number order.
Browser - Software (most commonly Netscape or Internet Explorer) used to navigate the World Wide Web.
CLI (Center for Learning and Instruction) - Shared by Reference Services and the Faculty Center for Learning Development. Provides facilities for hands-on instruction in the use of library and other teaching and learning technologies, as well as FCLD offices. Mortensen Library main floor.
Call Number - Unique letter and number combination to identify the location of a book or bound periodical on the shelf. Mortensen and Allen (Hartt) Libraries use LC (Library of Congress) call numbers. Call numbers group materials by subject.
C-Pods - (Collaborative-Pods) are designed to allow three students to work together on a project without having to crowd around a computer station. This allows students to spread out while working together on a computer with three keyboards, three mice, and a 42-inch monitor. C-Pods are located on the main level of Mortensen Library.
Catalog - See Libraries Catalog.
Cataloging - Office responsible for the creation of the Libraries Catalog, including description, creation of the bibliographic record, and assignment of the call number. Part of Technical Services.
Circulation - Service desk where books are checked out and returned. Also provides reserves, videos/DVDs, holds and recalls. Pick up Interlibrary Services materials here, too. Main level, Mortensen and Allen.
Citation - Bibliographic information about an information source. Includes (at minimum) author, title, publication date.
Collection - The materials owned by a library. Also, a book consisting of articles, essays, etc. gathered from other sources and republished.
Compact - Storage area for less used materials. Items in Compact can be retrieved by Circulation staff.
Current Periodicals - The most recent issues of periodicals. Usually, but not always, the current year. In Mortensen, shelved on the lower level in alphabetical order by title.
Database - Organized collection of information. In libraries, used specifically to refer to online information about journal articles, books, and other research materials.
Dissertation - Final research project completed by student in a doctoral program. Most are available in the stacks, but older ones may only be in the Archives.
E-Doc - Electronic access to articles requested through Interlibrary Services.
Electronic Books - Full text of selected books available online.
Electronic Journals - Periodicals providing online full text access to most articles from a designated time period.
Electronic Reserves - Assigned readings for class, in PDF format for reading or printing from a computer.
Electronically Available Journals - Periodicals which may originate in paper form or online, but provide online full text access to most articles.
ERIC - Documents Collection of non-journal education materials indexed by the ERIC database and available on microfiche. Lower level Mortensen.

FCLD (Faculty Center for Learning Development) - University Center supporting the teaching environment by assisting faculty with the incorporation of technology and new teaching methods into their established curriculum. Housed on the main floor of Mortensen as part of the CLI.
Full Text - Online reproduction of the complete content of an article or book. Also, journals in which the majority of the articles have their content available online.
Hartt Library - See Allen Library.
Hold - Process to request a book which is currently charged out. The current borrower will not be able to renew the book, and the person placing the hold will be notified to pick it up at Circulation. Ask for information at Circulation.
ILS or ILL - See Interlibrary Services
ISBN - International Standard Book Number. - Unique number, assigned by the publisher to a specific book title. Do not confuse with Call Number.
ISSN - International Standard Serial Number. - Unique number, assigned by the publisher to a specific periodical title. Do not confuse with Call Number.
ITS - (Information Technology Services) the University department responsible for computer services, including staffing, maintenance and operation of Users Branches.
Index - Detailed alphabetical guide, usually, to the content of a book or series of books (such as an encyclopedia). Also, an alphabetical subject guide to articles in a collection of periodicals, published on a regular schedule.
Interlibrary Services - Also referred to as ILL, obtains books or copies of articles not owned by University Libraries. Connected to over 9,000 libraries worldwide. Average delivery of one to two weeks for articles, two to three weeks for books. Occasional fees if charged by the lending library. Online request forms available on University Libraries homepage. The ILS office is on the lower level of Mortensen.
Journal - Professional or research publication issued on a regular schedule, and containing articles. Also referred to as periodical or serial.

LC - (Library of Congress). The national library of the United States. Also refers to the call number system used by Mortensen and Allen Libraries, and the subject headings used in the Libraries Catalog.
Libraries Catalog - Online database of the holdings of University Libraries, consisting of the Mortensen and Allen Libraries. More generally, the database of the holdings of any library. The starting point for most research projects.
MTS - Media Technology Services. Provides audio and video support for teaching and learning at the University. Housed on the lower level of Mortensen Library.
Micro - See Microfilm.
Microform -
Microfiche - Photographic reproduction of a document (usually a journal) on a flat piece of film. Filed in alphabetical order in Mortensen, lower level.
Microfilm - Photographic reproduction of a document (usually a journal) on rolled film. Referred to in the Periodicals List as Micro. Filed in alphabetical order in Mortensen, lower level.
Mortensen Library - The main library at the University of Hartford, serving most of the colleges, and including special Art and Judaica collections. Part of Gray Center.
Music Library - See Allen Library.

Periodicals - Regularly published collection of articles. Also referred to as magazines, journals, newspapers, etc. Use the Periodicals List from the University Libraries homepage to identify those held. Also, the office responsible for maintaining the collection. Part of Technical Services. Mortensen lower level and Allen.
Reference Services -
Renew - Process which allows you to extend the loan period for a book. Some restrictions may apply. Ask at Circulation for information.
Reserves - Assigned readings for classes. Kept at Circulation. Some may also be available as Electronic Reserves.
Serial - Generic term for regularly or irregularly published recurring materials. Includes periodicals, journals, annuals.
Stacks - Shelves in the libraries.
Standing Order - A serial publication which is automatically shipped and billed to the library as it is released.
Subject Headings - Formally controlled and applied terms to describe the subject of a book or article. Used to focus a search particularly when keyword searching is not successful. Ask a librarian for assistance.
Technical Services - Mortensen Library department responsible for acquiring and making all libraries materials accessible. Includes Acquisitions, Cataloging, Interlibrary Services, and Periodicals.
Thesis - Final research project completed by honors or masters level student. Most are available in the stacks, but older ones may only be in the Archives.
Trial Database - Database available for a short test period. Change frequently.

University Libraries - All libraries at the University of Hartford.
Users Branch - Computer lab with both Windows and Macintosh workstations, providing desktop applications such as word processing and spreadsheets, some special software, and Internet access. Supported by ITS.
Web Reference Tools - Collection of online information sources paralleling the Reference collection.
Web Subject Pages - Online information sources, arranged in broad categories. Selected by University Libraries staff as starting points for University students.
