Library Instruction - Allen Library

Allen Library              Mortensen Library

Allen Library staff provide assistance and informal instruction to users in the library. Formal instruction in library research generally occurs within the context of Hartt School classes. Online resource guides and tutorials are also available.

Undergraduate Instruction
  • The Hartt School has a bibliographic instruction course in place for all Hartt undergraduate students. Information Literacy in the Performing Arts, HLM 020, is a required zero-credit course which teaches students searching and evaluation techniques necessary for undergraduate coursework. This course presents basic reference materials and subject-specific resources in print and electronic format. HLM 020 is offered through the University's Blackboard program. For additional information, contact Tom Caw, Public Services Librarian, 768-4770.
  • Two of Hartt’s music history courses, Perspectives on Music History (HLM 212) and Romanticism to the Present (HLM 213) have research components taught by library staff.
Graduate Instruction
  • Students majoring in music history, theory, composition, and instrumental or vocal studies are required to take Proseminar in Music History (HLM 615) which includes several sessions taught by library staff.
  • Students majoring in music education are required to take Research and Writing (MED 620) which also includes instruction by library staff.
Special Classes
Allen Library staff provide individual class instruction upon request. These classes build on those listed above. To ensure a successful class, faculty attendance is required and active involvement in the session is requested. Contact Tom Caw, Public Services Librarian, 768-4770 to reserve instruction sessions.

Individual Instruction for Faculty
Faculty may request individual instruction sessions by contacting Allen Library Public Services librarians at 860.768.4770. Graduate Assistants are welcome to attend. Librarians will also schedule time to work with faculty or students on specific projects. Call for an appointment.
