All patrons of the University Libraries must present their current University ID cards at the circulation desk to check out any material. Please refer to the appropriate chart below for loan periods, renewal limits, and fees. Reserve items, audio-visual materials, periodicals, and laptop computers are for in-library use only. Exceptions for class or special projects may be made at the discretion of library staff. Alumni may borrow circulating materials using their Alumni ID card (available from the Office of Alumni Relations). Guests may borrow circulating materials using a Guest Borrower card, which is available for purchase at the Mortensen Library circulation desk. Note that this information applies to Allen Library only. Mortensen Library has different lending policies.
Ask at the Circulation Desk if an item is not on the shelf. You may fill out a Missing Item card to initiate a search. You will be notified when the item is available.
*Doctoral students may borrow 40 items at a time.
** TAs may borrow Audio-Visual materials for 7 days, for teaching purposes only.
*** Alumni may not borrow laptop computers.

Late Fees
Circulating items are due after three weeks (or at the end of the term), regardless of whether the items bear a date-due stamp, or if they have been stamped with an incorrect date. It is library policy to charge late fees in the amount of 10 cents per item per day for circulating materials. The maximum late fee is $10 per item. When a patron's outstanding fees reach $20, borrowing privileges are blocked.
Patrons are liable for the fees for items borrowed on their ID. Any material that is 45 days overdue will be considered "Lost," and have the replacement cost and a $15.00 nonrefundable processing fee billed through the Bursar's Office. Patrons are also liable for the accumulated Overdue Fees for the item. The Lost Item Replacement Fee will be forgiven if the item is returned within one year of the billing date.
Renew Online
You may be able to renew items borrowed from the University Libraries online on or before the due date via the Libraries Catalog My Account feature. One renewal is permitted if no hold has been placed on the item and the item is not overdue. If no renewal is available, please call Allen Library (860.768.4491) or Mortensen Library (860.768.4264) for assistance.
